balcony for a greek village

community center & plaza

Inspired by childhood memories of growing up in Nikolitsi, “Balcony for a Greek Village” is conceived as an events and leisure center that re-establishes a communal heart for the village.

Building on the archetype of the programmed platform, the stoa defines the southern edge of Nikolitsi’s newly designed platea, acting both as a boundary and as an extension of its terraced levels. Local courtyards—where landscape and architecture merge—inform the stoa’s ambiguity between inside and outside, while the linear sequence of rooms recalls vernacular dwellings where every space opened directly onto the courtyard.

The pavilion is unified through a monolithic material expression, its rose-tinted concrete emphasizing the colonnade and southern light shaft as architectural anchors.

With its textured surfaces and open plan, the building serves as a bridge between Nikolitsi’s past and future—an adaptable form designed to evolve with the life of the village over time.

Multiple shapes, textures and patterns were tested for the pavilion. Some adventurous while others somber.

At the end of the process, an elemental

diagram was selected; functional and thoughtful with no superfluous details
